History

The Central Yoga School has been running yoga classes, workshops and retreats exclusively in the Iyengar tradition in Surry Hills and near Central Station since 1998. James Hasemer is the backbone of the school and has propagated his passion for Iyengar yoga through his consistent and tireless teaching of classes for more than 20 years. Many students who started classes with him before the turn of the century still attend the school today.
Classes were initially run from a shiatsu college on George Street in Haymarket, close to Central Station. Not long after the shiatsu college closed down and new premises were found in Buckingham Street on the Surry Hills side of Central Station.

The Buckingham Street premises was large and spacious and, at that time, was the only yoga school in the area. In 2005 the building was sold and new premises were sought. The school was relocated to Devonshire Street and continued at these premises for three years.

Since 2008 the school has been situated at its current location on Cooper Street….
